It is not uncommon for the Napoléon high school in L’Aigle (Orne) to stand out for the talent of the students in the marquetry, sculpture and cabinetmaking sections.

This year again the establishment can boast of having among its ranks, Pascal Schudy who will represent in the “Prix Avenir et Métier d’” competition.

A reorientation

At 21, Pascal Schudy found his calling. Arriving at high school in the general curriculum, he quickly realizes that it is not for him. “I didn’t like it, I was there because I had to be there,” he explains.

Luckily, a teacher directed him towards the cabinetmaking sector. He did a one-week internship there and it was a revelation: Pascal asked to change career path.

Here he joins the CAP cabinetmaking which he subsequently completes with the patent for crafts in cabinetmaking then he joins the Ornamental Sculpture sector before joining this year the Marquetry sector.

400 hours of work on his work

Just one year after starting to sculpt, Pascal Schudy was rewarded by winning the first regional prize in the “Prix Avenir et Métier d’Art” competition organized by the National Institute of Crafts.

He owes this prize to his more than 400 hours of work which allowed him to give birth to his work “Lucane Cerf Volant”.

I wanted to go with an animal sculpture, but something that you don’t see often.

So, he begins research and discovers an artist who worked on the wasp. “I found the idea of the insect very interesting to work on.” Among all the insects, it is on the stag beetle that Pascal sets his sights, “I wanted to work on the domed ones”.

The end result is impressive. His teacher, Benoit Boscher, even speaks of a “prowess”. “He did this outside of the program. Pascal came in his free time, he took it to the boarding school in the evening to work on it.”

Soon the world of work

An investment which has borne fruit given the recognition obtained. “I didn’t expect the result of the competition at all. Just presenting it, I was happy” remembers Pascal.

When they said I was the winner, I couldn’t believe it! I didn’t know how to react.

A nice surprise and pride shared by the teacher. “It’s a difficult competition because there is only one who goes to the national each time.”

This year, Pascal is finishing his school career with marquetry. Then it will head to the world of work. A world of work which should be more difficult for them since “the three high school courses give them a wider opening to the employment pool”.
