Henner, the ribbon, the embers: a contemporary exhibition at the Jean-Jacques Henner museum

The Jean-Jacques Henner museum highlights young artists: discover the work of Margaux Laurens-Neel through the exhibition “Henner, the ribbon, the embers”, to be seen from May 15 to September 23, 2024.

THE Jean-Jacques Henner museum preserves and highlights the work of the Alsatian painter. The hundreds of paintings, drawings, furniture and objects that trace Henner’s life and career continue to inspire artists of the new generation: this is why the Parisian museum regularly welcomes artists in residence.

Margaux Laurens-Neel (French-British painter, photographer and sculptor) is just finishing her year of residency. A year of work and creation which ends with a great exposure, to discover from May 15 to September 23, 2024.

This exhibition, entitled Henner, the ribbon, the emberstakes the form of an artistic dialogue between the 19th century painter and the young contemporary artist. Margaux Laurens-Neel questions and revisits two important motifs in Jean-Jacques Henner’s painting: the Alsatian women and the naiads.

Muses, divinities of nature, guardians of traditions: at Henner, the Women is a recurring subject, studied in all its forms, in all its complexity and diversity. Margaux Laurens-Neel chose to mix these figures to give birth to a new mythology. Thus, the naiads are adorned with ribbons and Alsatian hats.

L’legacy Alsatian work by Jean-Jacques Henner is then put in the spotlight, as is his fascination with the figure of the ancient muse. Bodies, faces, gestures mingle on the canvas with the folkloric symbols of the Rhine region. Margaux Laurens-Neel brings her touch modern to this artistic heritage, by revealing original creations made using photography, sculpture, painting…

Come admire the work of Jean-Jacques Henner from a new angle, and take the opportunity to discover a young contemporary artist, thanks to the exhibition at the Jean-Jacques Henner museum.
