Follow the full coverage
Your most beautiful market
Between Canigou, the Spanish border and the Mediterranean Sea, Céret leans against the Pyrenees. At the bend of the cobbled streets, climbing the mountain, the Neuf Jets fountain or the Hermitage of Saint-Ferréol are revealed. Above the Tech, the Devil’s Bridge presents its sulphurous legend: the evil one demands a life from anyone who sends him a cat. The Fontfrède pass, a major crossing point between occupied France and Spain, dominates the city: a stele of the escapees perpetuates the memory. Frequented by Picasso, Juan Gris and Léger, the city has seen many painters and writers pass through. Chaïm Soutine appreciated the brightness of this southern city.
The Céret market in detail
In the shade of the plane trees, the market of the town of around 7,600 inhabitants takes place every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The stalls extend across the city center, from Boulevard Jean-Jaurès, to Place Pablo-Picasso, via Boulevard Lafayette, Boulevard Arago, Place de la Liberté and Place des Tilleuls. The capital of cherries sends its first red fruits to the President of the Republic every year. On the stands, we find Catalan lamb, cargolada, boutifarre and other cold cuts, escalivade (baked vegetables), olada (meat and vegetables in a pot) or even bols de picolats (meats and bread in milk).
