PICTO New Yorkin collaboration with SQUADpresents the exhibition POOL of the famous visual artist MarieVic. Known for her visually arresting and thought-provoking work, MarieVic’s latest series takes viewers on a surreal journey across the United States, from the unique perspective of the country’s swimming pools. Through this immersive collection of underwater photographs, the artist challenges our perceptions of leisure, sustainability, and the American Dream.

MarieVic [b. Paris, France] is a visual artist currently living and working in New York City. She is a graduate of the École Spéciale d’Architecture and holds an MFA from Parsons The New School for Design.
POOL is a series of underwater photographs captured across the United States, documenting the country from a unique perspective: beneath its swimming pools, looking up at the sky.
Swimming pools are iconic symbols of leisure and carefree enjoyment. They evoke pleasure and luxury, but also highlight the environmental impact of these desires, raising questions about sustainability and resource consumption. This duality makes them an essential subject of exploration.
MarieVic is inspired by Ovid’s fable of Narcissus, a timeless reflection on self-absorption and its consequences. In the fable, a reflecting pool draws Narcissus into the depths of his own image. In POOL, MarieVic invites us to reconsider this reflection by offering a new point of view during her journey through American swimming pools.
The series twists reality, shedding light on the troubling effects of consumerism on the American landscape. Through this lens, MarieVic reveals a world that operates by its own rules, prompting deeper reflection on our cultural relationship with indulgence and excess.
