Herzi Halevi’s resignation was expected. This is an admission of an immense failure: not having been able to prevent the October 7 attack carried out by Hamas – the worst massacre in the history of the country, with some 1,200 victims. “My responsibility for this terrible failure accompanies me every day, every hour, and will remain with me for the rest of my life”we can read in his resignation letter, published Tuesday January 21. He will leave his post on March 6.

The chief of staff, 57 years old, including forty in the army, took office in January 2023. He is the first high-ranking officer from an Orthodox Jewish background to reach the top of the military institution, a body where the Labor left has long been dominant. He is also the first in this position to reside in a West Bank settlement, just on the edge of Israeli territory. In the process, Yaron Finkelman, the head of the Southern Region Command, which is responsible for the Gaza Strip, also announced his resignation, for the same reasons, but without giving a precise date for his departure.
