Change in the automotive sector. Recently, the regulations have evolved. Equipment becomes obligatory under penalty of being fined by the police.
New mandatory automotive equipment
At the start of 2025, the automotive world is experiencing major changes in terms of mandatory equipment. These are intended to strengthen safety on the roads and harmonize European regulations. All motorists must ensure they have the essential items in their vehicle, under penalty of financial penalties.
The warning triangle and the high visibility yellow vest remain at the heart of this obligation. These tools, already well known, are essential for alerting other users in the event of an incident. The vest, CE marked, must be easily accessible from the passenger compartment, while the approved warning triangle is generally stored in the trunk. These two elements, although basic, remain mandatory.
Another important point is vehicle lighting. All types of lights necessary for driving must be in perfect working order: high beam, dipped beam, front and rear position lights, rear fog lights, turn signals, brake lights, hazard warning light and rear license plate light. Regular monitoring of their condition is essential to avoid not only a fine, but also an accident linked to poor visibility. Furthermore, an approved horn, compliant registration plates, as well as that a windshield and side windows in good condition are among the equipment to be scrupulously checked.
Seasonal and European specificities
-Winter introduces an additional dimension to obligations. Between November 1 and March 31, in 34 French departments, it is imperative to have winter tires or chains to cope with harsh weather conditions. This equipment guarantees better grip and increased safety on icy or snowy roads.
For drivers wishing to travel beyond French borders, it is crucial to respect the specific standards of the countries visited. In Spain, for example, an emergency lamp complying with the V16 standard is mandatory. This device, similar to a rotating beacon, makes it possible to effectively signal its presence in the event of a breakdown or accident. In Germany, Belgium, Greece and the United Kingdom, the presence of a first aid kit in the vehicle is essential. These countries also require, in certain cases, a fire extinguisher and spare bulbs, notably in Croatia, Slovenia and in the countries of the United Kingdom.
