Tragic accident in Les Arcs: death of a British skier

A 62-year-old British skier died on Tuesday after colliding with another skier in the Les Arcs area, in Savoie, we learned from reliable sources.

Around 10:30 a.m., she was descending the “well-groomed” black slope of the Aiguille Rouge when she lost control of her skis, Philippe Janin, director of slope safety at the resort, told AFP, confirming information from local radio here Pays de Savoie (formerly Bleu).

She collided with a 35-year-old man stopped on a bump below the track, then died shortly after when emergency services intervened, he said. Both were wearing helmets and the man suffered a broken leg, he added.

An investigation aimed at determining precisely the circumstances of the accident is underway, Albertville prosecutor Benoît Bachelet told AFP.

Out of some 10 million skiers, 10 traumatic deaths are recorded on average each year on French slopes, including three to five due to a collision with an obstacle or between skiers, according to Domaines skiables de France (DSF).
