Mexico | The president wants a fair “dialogue” with Trump

(Mexico City) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum declared on Sunday that she was “convinced” that “dialogue will prevail” with Donald Trump, but without her country being “subordinate” to the United States.

“What is certain is that we will always move forward with our heads held high,” declared the left-wing president in front of thousands of supporters, gathered in Mexico City for her first 100 days in power.

“Mexico is a free and independent country and as I said, we coordinate, we collaborate, but we are never subordinates,” she continued, to applause, one week before the inauguration of the new American president.

Donald Trump has threatened to tax Mexican imports at 25% if Mexico does not stem migrant and drug trafficking. He also promised his supporters a mass deportation of undocumented migrants.

Mexico is the United States’ largest global trading partner, home to millions of its nationals.

Mme Sheinbaum praised their contribution to “the economy of Mexico, but let it be heard loud and clear, they contribute even more to the economy of the United States.”

Remittances from Mexicans living in the United States to their families back home (remesas) represented 3.4% of GDP in 2024, according to the Spanish bank BBVA, leader in the Mexican market.

Concerning the nagging problem of narcoviolence, Mme Sheinbaum pointed to a 16% drop in homicides between September and December.

She also once again defended the very controversial reform of the judicial power, which provides for the popular election of judges and magistrates up to the Supreme Court.

“Let there be no doubt, the judiciary will be autonomous,” she said.

Faced with Donald Trump’s threats, Mexico and the first female president in its history seemed to respond with a mixture of pledges given to its large northern neighbor and firmness.

On Friday, Mexican authorities announced the discovery of a clandestine “tunnel” to the United States in Ciudad Juarez, from where many migrants attempt to cross the border.

In recent weeks, Mexico has also announced two seizures of fentanyl, a synthetic drug that causes thousands of overdoses in the United States.

But with an old card in support, the “president” proposed renaming the United States “Mexican America”, in response to Donald Trump’s suggestion to call the Gulf of Mexico, “Gulf of America”.

After three months in power, the 62-year-old president, a doctor in physics, enjoys a popularity that exceeds that of her predecessor and mentor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

A total of 80% of those questioned approve “a lot” or “a little” of his action, according to the opinion survey by the Enkoll firm.
