Israel carried out airstrikes in eastern and southern Lebanon on Sunday, according to the Lebanese National News Agency. The Israeli army said it had targeted Hezbollah and in particular smuggling routes along the border with Syria.
The official Lebanese agency ANI said that Israeli aircraft targeted the outskirts of Janta, in the eastern region of Baalbek, as well as the surroundings of Nabatieh in the south of the country. This media did not mention possible victims.
‘Among the targets struck were a rocket launch site, a military site and routes along the Syrian-Lebanese border used to smuggle weapons to Hezbollah,’ the Israeli army said. presenting the targets as threats to the ceasefire monitoring mechanism.
The strikes come less than two weeks before January 26, the date the Israeli army is due to withdraw from southern Lebanon under the ceasefire agreement. Each party accuses the other of having violated it.
‘Violation flagrante’
In its press release, the Israeli army explains that it acted ‘in accordance with the ceasefire agreement’ between Israel and Lebanon. Under the agreement, Hezbollah must dismantle its remaining military infrastructure in southern Lebanon and move its forces north of the Litani River, some 30 kilometers from the Israeli-Lebanese border.
The UN peacekeeping force in January accused Israel of ‘blatant violation’ of the Security Council resolution which forms the basis of the ceasefire.
Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed five people on Friday, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The Israeli army claimed to have targeted a Hezbollah vehicle carrying weapons.
A truce, which came into force on November 27, put an end to an open war of more than two months between Hezbollah and Israel, which left nearly 4,000 dead in Lebanon and devastated strongholds of the pro-Iranian formation.
