Use of handbags to fight fires draws criticism

AA / Washington / Hakan Copur

The use of small handbags by firefighters battling blazes in parts of Los Angeles has drawn criticism on social media.

“Los Angeles is the second largest city in the wealthiest country in the world and its firefighters fight fires with women’s handbags,” wrote conservative journalist Collin Rugg on X, sharing images showing Los Angeles firefighters (LAFD) using handbags to throw water on the fire to put out the flames.

The fires, which have raged for several days in Los Angeles and surrounding areas of California, continue to spread to new regions.

While the LAFD defended the practice of using handbags as a practical and effective tool for fighting small fires, the images sparked criticism online regarding the adequacy of resources in one of the wealthiest cities of the United States.

Some netizens noted that the purses weren’t “lady’s purses,” while many wondered if the LAFD had access to more professional equipment to handle small fires.

Authorities have confirmed that the fires which are wreaking havoc in several neighborhoods of Los Angeles, including an upscale neighborhood, have claimed the lives of five people.

The LAFD described the fires as among the most destructive in the city’s history, with about 2,000 homes destroyed so far.

The fires have reached Hollywood, and reports indicate that celebrities such as Hilton, Mandy Moore and Cary Elwes have lost their homes.

As a safety measure, authorities announced the closure of all schools in the affected regions.
