According to the pro-Saudi newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, citing Lebanese parliamentary sources, American envoy Amos Hochstein declared during a meeting: “The deployment of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon will be carried out and Israel will withdraw to the Blue Line at the end of the ceasefire period on January 27.”
According to the report, Hochstein emphasized: “The agreement means that the state will be the only entity authorized to possess weapons in Lebanon, and parties and militias will be prohibited from possessing weapons.” He insisted that the agreement will apply to the entire Lebanese territory, without exception, refuting any ambiguous interpretation limiting its application to areas south of the Litani.
Hochstein clarified that “Hezbollah's weapons, military installations and tunnels must be handed over to the Lebanese army, preferably eliminated”, stressing that they will be destroyed.
These statements come as Mahmoud Qamati, vice-president of Hezbollah's political council, threatens to break the ceasefire with Israel. “We have given 60 days to the new mechanism and international law to protect Lebanon. We are committed to patience for 60 days, but the 61st day will be completely different,” he warned.
According to the Al-Joumhouriya newspaper, citing a Lebanese security source, more than 1,000 violations of the ceasefire by the IDF have been recorded since it came into force about a month ago.
Lebanese channel MTV reports that Hochstein is expected to present a significant proposal: extending the ceasefire agreement and the Israeli withdrawal for another 60 days, given the Lebanese army's inability to deploy 10,000 troops to the south of the Litani.
