Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, released from prison at the beginning of December for a period of three weekshas not been imprisoned, but her legal status remains uncertain and she is likely to be “arrested at any time,” the lawyer for the Mohammadi family told AFP on Monday.
The famous 52-year-old activist was released on December 4 for medical reasons, benefiting from a three-week leave, which was therefore due to end on December 25. His Iranian lawyer Mostafa Nili had requested an extension of this permission, but the judicial authority never ruled on the question, plunging Mme Mohammadi in legal limbo.
“Since December 25, the lack of response from the authorities to Narges Mohammadi’s request for an extension therefore makes, in fact, his continued absence illegal and punishable by a new conviction,” underlined the Franco-Canadian lawyer. Iranian Chirinne Ardakani, who defends the family.
“It is a cruel strategy deliberately deployed by the authorities,” according to Me Ardakani, which aims to “reinforce the reign of the arbitrary” and to “increase psychological warfare against her since she can be arrested at any time”.

In a press release on Monday, the Narges Mohammadi Foundation indicated that the activist went to Mashhad (north-east) on January 5, where she met supporters and human rights activists. She also visited Vakilabad prison, where she called for the release of political prisoners, according to the statement.
Convicted many times and imprisoned for twenty-five years for her commitment against the compulsory veil for women and against the death penalty, Narges Mohammadi was locked up for a large part of the last decade. Until her temporary release in early December, she was incarcerated in Evin prison in Tehran.
From the UN to the Norwegian Nobel committee, many voices have demanded his unconditional and permanent release.
