Political supporters attacked several results tabulation centers, according to the Ghana Electoral Commission. Destruction of equipment, agents mistreated, officials forced to proclaim partial results: the Commission had to suspend recount operations in certain constituencies.
The Ghana Electoral Commission on Friday revealed violent incidents at nine counting centers during the December 7 general elections, which saw the victory of the opponent John Dramani Mahama against the ruling candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia.
In a detailed report, the electoral institution reports coordinated attacks against its agents and infrastructure. Political supporters stormed several counting centers, notably in the Eastern region in Nsawam/Adoagyiri, where two ballot boxes were destroyed, and in the Ashanti region, where the local Commission office was set on fire.
The most serious incident was reported in Techiman South, where an election official was forced at gunpoint to announce partial results covering only 135 of the constituency’s 282 polling stations.
In Greater Accra, at Dome Kwabenya, polling agents were assaulted and voting materials set on fire, while in Ablekuman North, law enforcement officers present were unable to prevent the destruction of voting materials.
The Electoral Commission says the recount process in affected areas is temporarily suspended, pending “adequate security conditions” promised by the Ghana Police. However, these incidents did not call into question the victory of John Dramani Mahama, who will succeed Nana Akufo-Addo as president of Ghana.
