Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, an ally of pro-Iranian Hezbollah, accused Israel on Monday of «violation flagrante» of the ceasefire. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar on Monday rejected accusations that Israel is violating the truce in force in Lebanon. Le Figaro takes stock of the situation.
Netanyahu accuses Hezbollah of “serious violation” of truce
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday described a Hezbollah attack on a contested area on the borders of Lebanon and the Syrian Golan annexed by Israel as a “serious violation” of the truce.
“Hezbollah's firing towards Har Dov (the Hebrew name of the area known as Chebaa Farms, Editor's note) is a serious violation of the ceasefire and Israel will react forcefully. We are determined to uphold the ceasefire and respond to any violation by Hezbollah, from the slightest to the most serious,” Mr. Netanyahu said, according to a statement from his office.
Hezbollah claims first attack on Israeli military position since truce began
Lebanese Hezbollah said Monday evening that it had attacked an Israeli military position, for the first time since the truce came into force on November 27, in response to «violations» ceasefire by Israel.
In a press release, the pro-Iranian formation specified that it had targeted an Israeli position on “the occupied hills of Kfar Chouba”which Lebanon claims to be part of its territory. The Israeli army claimed that Hezbollah fired “two projectiles” towards its positions.
Lebanese Parliament Speaker Accuses Jewish State of “Flagrant Violation” of Ceasefire Agreement
Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, an ally of pro-Iranian Hezbollah, accused Israel on Monday of «violation flagrante» of the ceasefire with Lebanon which entered into force on November 27. In a statement, Berri called on the committee overseeing the truce, which includes the United States and France, “to urgently take action and force Israel to stop its violations and withdraw” of Lebanese territory.
The head of French diplomacy, Jean-Noël Barrot, insisted Monday to his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar on “the need for all parties to respect the ceasefire in Lebanon”said a press release from his ministry. Several Israeli strikes have targeted Lebanon since the ceasefire came into force between Israel and Hezbollah, which for its part has not announced a response.
On Monday, an Israeli drone targeted a Lebanese army post in Hermel, a region of the Bekaa plain in eastern Lebanon, far from the border with Israel, injuring one soldier according to the army. A man was also killed by an Israeli drone strike on the village of Marjeyoun near the border in southern Lebanon, the Health Ministry said.
Israel rejects accusations that it is violating the truce
