Between Donald Trump and Claudia Sheinbaum, a surface agreement on the Mexican border

The least we can say is that there are many potential disputes between the United States and Mexico at the dawn of Donald Trump’s second term. The announcement by the future tenant of the White House of his intention to impose customs tariffs of 25% on Mexico and Canada from the first day of his second term initially provoked the ire of the Mexican president .

Finally, the two protagonists spoke on the phone, Wednesday November 27. Claudia Sheinbaum described the conversation as “excellent”, while Donald Trump claimed in a message posted on his network, Truth Social, that the discussion had been “very productive”, underlines The Washington Post.

If the daily newspaper considers that this is“a change of tone, more conciliatory”, the fact remains that Trump and Sheinbaum seem to have drawn very different conclusions from their telephone exchange.

“They gave very different versions of the measures that Mexico was prepared to take to avoid a customs escalation,” adds The New York Times. It is particularly on the question of the fight against immigration that the agreement between the president of Mexico and the future tenant of the White House failed, underlines the newspaper. While Trump trumpeted on social media that Mexico had agreed to stop migratory flows to the United States, “effectively closing our southern border,” Claudia Sheinbaum stressed that she had only spoken about the migrant caravans which no longer reached the border with the United States.

“During our conversation with President Trump, I explained to him Mexico’s overall strategy to address the migratory phenomenon while respecting human rights. Thanks to this, migrants and caravans are taken care of before they reach the border,” notably wanted to clarify the Mexican president on the social network X, even adding: “We reaffirm that Mexico’s position is not to close borders, but to build bridges between governments and between peoples.”
