Five magistrates – three judges and two prosecutors – and a soldier were arrested in Venezuela during the neutralization of a new “conspiracy” against the power of President Nicolas Maduro, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced on Saturday.
The Venezuelan government frequently denounces plots aimed at ousting Nicolas Maduro, whose contested re-election sparked protests that left 28 dead and led to the arrest of more than 2,400 people.
“There is a new plot, a new operation against the country, a new destabilization operation that has its origins in the state of Zulia” (a northwestern oil state), Diosdado Cabello said at a conference press release, specifying that magistrates and military personnel, active and retired, had been recruited for this plan.
“Direct links” with the leader of the opposition
He then cited the names of the five arrested magistrates and then indicated that a soldier had also been arrested. According to him, those arrested today have “direct links” with opposition leader María Corina Machado.
Investigations are continuing and other arrests are not excluded, he said, referring to businessmen linked to “paramilitary” groups training in Colombia and Ecuador.
This week, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez claimed that three oil facilities were attacked as part of a plot by the Venezuelan opposition. Eleven people were arrested. In October, Diosdado Cabello announced the arrest of 19 foreign “mercenaries” for plots against the Maduro government, including Americans and Colombians.
