It is high time for Moscow to end its war against Ukraine, Ignazio Cassis told the UN Security Council on Monday. According to him, after 1000 days of war, the guns must be silent, while the attack began in violation of the UN Charter.
Mr. Cassis said he was deeply concerned by the massive attacks carried out in recent days against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Such attacks represent a great danger for the civilian population as winter approaches.
The Federal Councilor also said that the war was not only destabilizing international security through the nuclear threat, but also endangering global food and energy security.
Ignazio Cassis further criticized the risk of the war expanding due to the presence of thousands of North Korean troops who are reportedly intervening in the war effort alongside Russia. He reiterated that Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected within its internationally recognized borders.
The Foreign Minister recalled the meeting at the Bürgenstock five months ago, during which negotiations on peace in Ukraine were held for the first time at the highest level.
“Since then, we have continued these efforts relentlessly and we will continue to do so until a diplomatic solution is found,” Cassis said.
Middle East
On Monday, the foreign minister participated in three meetings of the UN Security Council in New York. In addition to Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and Sudan was on the Council’s agenda.
During the meeting on the situation in the Middle East, Mr. Cassis called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages. A ceasefire must also be achieved in Lebanon, he added.
The political solution for peace in the Middle East is known, Mr. Cassis said. ‘This is the two-state solution, which offers Israelis and Palestinians the prospect of living in peace and security.’
Sudan
The Security Council also passed a resolution aimed at helping bring peace to Sudan, which is in the grip of a civil war. After more than a year and a half of conflict, the country is facing one of the worst humanitarian disasters of our time.
Fourteen of the Council’s 15 members voted in favor of the resolution presented by Britain and Sierra Leone. But Russia vetoed it. Mr. Cassis expressed to the Council Switzerland’s regrets at the failure of the resolution.
After several bilateral meetings, the Ticino returned to Switzerland during the night from Monday to Tuesday. Switzerland is still a member of the UN Security Council until the end of the year.
