Since the election of Donald Trump in the United States, the slogan “your body, my choice” has become viral in masculinist spheres, used as a form of harassment against women, particularly on social networks.
“Your body, my choice. Forever.” This is the message posted, on November 6. Since then, the slogan has been shared hundreds of thousands of times by misogynistic Internet users and has also appeared on certain American campuses.
At the origin of this slogan, the reversal of the formula “my body, my choice”symbol of the struggles for the right to abortion and against sexual violence against women. Nicholas J. Fuentes' message was viewed more than 95 million times on X in one week. In his daily show broadcast on a streaming platform, he said: “Men win again! We will keep you down forever. You will never control your own bodies.”
He is not the only one whose misogynistic speech is freed. According to the ISD (Institute for the strategic dialogue), mentions “your body, my choice” et “go back to the kitchen” rose 4,600% in just 24 hours after the US election. Many Internet users report the harassment of which they are victims on their social networks. “I had to delete a video because I was being threatened. Men were commenting to say that my body is their choice and they couldn't wait for me to be raped,” says a TikTok user whose comments are reported by the ISD.
The movement seems to extend beyond social media. On some American campuses, students are filmed chanting “Your body, my choice”. One of these videos, widely shared on social networks, was filmed on the campus of Louisiana State University (LSU) and shared by Nicholas J. Fuentes. On Facebook, some parents and students report even explicit rape threats: “I advise you to sleep with one eye open tonight,” notes for example the ISD.
Another viral occurrence on social networks over the last week: references to the 19e amendment, which enshrines women's right to vote. Still according to the ISD, calls to repeal it increased by 663%. “We are back” – translate “we are back” -, regularly rejoices the masculinist, Andrew Tate followed by more than 10 million subscribers on X.
