Elected for a second term, Donald Trump announced on Wednesday November 13 that he was appointing Marco Rubio to the post of Secretary of State, confirming information from American media. The senator, known for his anti-China positions, will be “a staunch defender of our nation, a true friend to our allies, and a fearless warrior who will never back down in the face of our adversaries”said the president-elect in a press release.

Born in Miami, the son of Cuban immigrants, the influential 53-year-old Florida senator will become in January the first head of American diplomacy fluent in Spanish. Marco Rubio is also a strong supporter of Israel, fiercely opposing Iran and the rise of its nuclear program. Through his family history, he spoke out against the communist government of Havana or against other left-leaning Latin American countries, such as Venezuela.

On the war in Ukraine, he also made the same speech as Trump by asserting that kyiv was in a “impasse” against Russia and that the United States must demonstrate “pragmatism” rather than spending billions of dollars on weapons. “I don’t like what Vladimir Putin did, and we are interested in what’s happening there”he clarified. But “I think the future of the 21st century will be defined by what happens in the Indo-Pacific”. In the Senate, he notably called for arming Taiwan, through direct deliveries of American military equipment rather than through the sale of arms.
