On the eve of his 83rd birthday last month, Morgan Perigo was surprised to receive the jewel from his university that he had lost in 1977. A gift he owes to diver Alex Davis who discovered it during a treasure hunt in Barbados.
An unexpected birthday present. On the eve of his 83rd birthday, Morgan Perigo, a former student at McMaster University (Canada), discovered on his doorstep a package sent by FedEx containing the ring he wore when he graduated in 1965.
A surprising present since he had lost the jewel in the ocean in 1977 during a trip to Barbados with his wife and two children, reported the establishment's online newspaper. “One day I took my youngest son into the water. When he was knocked over by a wave, I wanted to catch him. That’s when he pulled on my hand, removing the ring from my finger,” said the octogenarian.
Although he thought he would never see his property again, Alex Davis, a professional diver from Barbados, fulfilled his wish to find it. It was in fact during a diving session with a metal detector that the ring resurfaced.
A careful investigation
“I found a McMaster University signet ring with three initials inside,” Alex Davis wrote in an email to the institution.
An email that reached Laura Escalante, alumni manager. It was she who tracked down Morgan Perigo even though she only had two clues at her disposal: the year 1965 and the initials FMP (Frederick Morgan Perigo).
She was thus able to contact the 83-year-old man who confirmed that he had lost his ring several decades ago. “This is incredible news,” he replied. Based on this experience, Laura Escalante even described it as “the most beautiful moment of her career”.
