Lhe climate activist Greta Thunberg has called the annual United Nations climate change conference, to be held this year in Baku, “simple greenwashing”.
The 21-year-old Swedish activist made the statements in an opinion piece published Monday in British newspaper The Guardian. In the article entitled “A “Cop of peace”? How can Azerbaijan, an authoritarian country and violator of human rights, organize this? » she points out that Azerbaijan’s entire economy relies on fossil fuels, which represent almost 90% of the country’s exports.
“Whatever it claims, Azerbaijan has no ambition to take climate action,” she said. The country plans to increase fossil fuel production, she added, which is inconsistent with the 1.5 degree warming limit set by the Paris climate agreement.

She also harshly criticized the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, saying many conference participants were afraid to criticize the government. “The Azerbaijani regime is guilty of ethnic cleansing, humanitarian blockades and war crimes, as well as repression of its own people and repression of civil society,” Ms Thunberg wrote.
Thunberg is currently in Georgia, Azerbaijan’s western neighbor, but has no plans to travel to Baku
