Anearly months at sea, stops in Singapore, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Turkey… 102 containers carrying 2,100 tonnes of suspicious waste returned to the Albanian port of Durrës on Friday, which they had left at the beginning of July, noted the AFP.
The ship “Moliva”, which had been stationary for around ten days off the coast of Durrës, was able to anchor there on Friday morning, and the containers must be taken care of by the authorities, according to port officials. .
Once unloaded from the ship, they will be sequestered by the Durrës public prosecutor’s office, which has been examining their contents for weeks: according to an NGO, they are filled with toxic waste and not, as initially indicated to customs, with oxide. of iron.
The containers will be transported away from the port, to a secure area monitored by the police, where they will be opened and their contents analyzed.
The Durrës public prosecutor’s office, which opened an investigation for “smuggling of prohibited goods” and “abuse of power”, in cooperation with the European Anti-Fraud Office (Olaf), asked several public institutions on Monday to make available their laboratories and experts to carry out the analyses.
According to information provided by Basel Action Network (BAN), an NGO specializing in tracking toxic waste, they are filled with electric arc furnace dust (EAFD).
This dust, classified in the toxic waste category by most legislation, must be stored and transported under very strict conditions.
