Ex-tropical storm Patty will hit Portugal and Spain: consequences in France?

While torrential rains, which have already killed at least 217 people, continue to fall on Spain, another meteorological phenomenon is already brewing. Tropical Depression Patty is approaching the coasts of Portugal, which it should reach in the coming days, and the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula.

Reclassified as a depression, this ex-storm, which has stationed itself on the Azores in recent days, “has tropical characteristics”, assures Guillaume Séchet, meteorologist and founder of the Météo-Villes site.

This is expected to cause significant rainfall in its path. Should we be worried about this in France? We take stock.

What impact does this depression have?

“It sometimes happens that a tropical depression approaches as close to the European coasts and affects Portugal,” declared Guillaume Séchet toactu.fr, even if it is an “uncommon” phenomenon. But this is not new. “And, it’s not a violent event,” continues the meteorologist.

As a result of the arrival of the ex-tropical storm, heavy rain are expected to fall on the west and south of Portugal. But nothing compares to the deadly floods in Spain. If the phenomenon is heading towards the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, the country should experience very limited consequences.

“Quickly, this rain will start to fade”, before even reaching Spain, specifies Guillaume Séchet. And so Spain should be spared.

And for France?

On the other side of the border marked by the Pyrenees, there is nothing to worry about.

“This storm is not going to arrive in France at all”assures Guillaume Séchet. France, like part of the European continent, remains influenced by a “huge anticyclone” for more than a week. And, for ten more days.
