«No Other Land», sous les bulldozers d’Israël

The only framed shot is that of the poster, the editing seems haphazard, the story terribly repetitive, and yet it is a film that strikes. No doubt because it takes us where no one ever goes to see: a region of the West Bank that Israel has decided to empty of its population to install a military base and settlements there. As a form of resistance, a collective of four young filmmakers – two Palestinians and two Israelis – formed to document it. After five years of work punctuated by the well-known events in Gaza, the result was covered with Audience Awards at festivals, starting with Berlin and Nyon. This deserved a theatrical release attempted by Ciné-Doc, a new specialist distributor.

The case is being played out in Masafer Yatta, around twenty hamlets located in the hills south of Hebron. The region was declared a “military zone” in the 1980s, but after a long legal battle that ended with authorization to evacuate, the bulldozers went into action. Son of activists, Basel Adra began recording this violence to alert public opinion via social networks. In 2019, his meeting with Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham led to the idea of a film. We find them on screen chatting as friends or in tense situations facing soldiers. And it is this double commitment, as witnesses and as actors, which makes the film valuable.
