14th named tropical storm: up to 300 mm of rain for these areas

Published on October 19, 2024 at 11:47 a.m.

The 14th named tropical storm of the season formed in the Atlantic. It will make landfall on Saturday late morning or early afternoon. She is heading towards Belize and a Mexican region very popular with tourists. Meet Nadine…

Can’t wait to touch down

Hurricane Milton set the bar high for anyone who dared to follow him… Well, it’s someone named Nadine who officially succeeds him! Fortunately, Nadine is a tropical storm and will not see its status change to that of a hurricane. It nevertheless takes regions by surprise, appearing on the horizon a little earlier than expected. Indeed, this 14th tropical storm of the season formed in the Atlantic during the night from Friday to Saturday. It was initially expected that it would make landfall on Saturday evening, but it should instead happen towards the end of the morning or the beginning of the afternoon.

Fortunately, Nadine won’t have much time to get organized before hitting land in Belize. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for Belize, Guatemala and southeastern Mexico.

A great wet danger

Since Nadine makes landfall today, her lifespan will not be very long. The fact remains that it carries with it several risks for the affected regions, from Belize City to south of Cancún, Mexico. After making landfall in Belize, Nadine will weaken to a post-tropical depression and move inland. The result: significant amounts of rain are forecast. By Sunday evening, 100 to 200 mm are expected.

It could even go up to 300 mm locally. Flooding and potential landslides should be monitored closely.

A visitor in a hurry

In addition to having a short lifespan, Nadine was visibly in a hurry to show up. Indeed, by landing in style on October 19, the 14th tropical storm of the season arrived a month earlier than normal, on November 19. Just like Kirk, Leslie and Milton, she therefore made up for the delay that Joyce had recorded at the end of September.

According to forecasts for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, the number of named tropical storms is expected to be between 17 and 24. Nadine is therefore the proud 14th representative. One thing is certain: the hurricanes have the wind in their sails since they have already reached their target with 9 “representatives” so far. Quick reminder: the hurricane season in the Atlantic basin officially lasts until November 30.
