lifting of indefinite strike notice after progress on the illegal gold panning issue

A series of six measures, including in particular the increase in military resources allocated to the fight against galamsey, the repeal of a regulation which authorized the mining of forest reserves, and the creation of specific courts. Here is what the government promised to the country’s three main unions during a meeting organized this Tuesday.

Actions considered sufficient for the organizers of what was initially to be an indefinite strike to withdraw their call at the last minute the next day. An arbitrary decision, taken without any consultation with the other unions which had nevertheless joined the movement: this is what the Ghanaian association of university professors (Utag) denounced.

In a press release published in the evening, the organization assured that these new measures did not change from those presented during a previous meeting at the end of which the call for a strike had nevertheless been maintained. Utag and other professional organizations announced this Wednesday evening that they would meet to establish possible actions, without the support of the three main unions.

Other actions against galamsey must nevertheless take place in the coming weeks. Starting with a demonstration by the Catholic diocese this Friday in the capital.
