Spain elected member of the United Nations Human Rights Council

Spain was elected on Wednesday a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the period 2025-2027, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

“With his election, Spain gives new impetus to its firm commitment to multilateralism and the United Nations as a means of guaranteeing coexistence, mutual trust and peace,” underlines the ministry in a press release.

As an elected member of the Council, Spain “assumes the responsibility of contributing to improving the effectiveness of the international protection of human rights”, we note, assuring that Spain will play a active role in seeking common ground during consultations and negotiations.

Likewise, the press release continues, Spain will promote specific lines of action in which the country has proven experience, such as the defense of real and effective equality of opportunities between men and women, the fight against all types of discrimination, protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, promotion of economic, social and cultural rights, and protection of human rights defenders as positive agents of change.

He added that this is a new milestone in Spain’s new foreign policy, a policy with its own identity and voice, based on a commitment to the values ​​that society values. Spanish identifies itself, such as peace, democracy and human rights, as well as on the defense of its interests and its institutions.

This is the third time that Spain is a member of the Council, having served there from 2011 to 2013, then for a second term from 2018 to 2020.
