Live – Heavy rain, orange alert, gusts: Storm Kirk sweeps Belgium

DHeavy rain will cross a large part of the south-east of the country on Wednesday afternoon, indicates the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) in its midday forecast. Maximum temperatures will vary between 12 and 14 degrees south of the Sambre et Meuse furrow, and around 15 degrees in most other regions. The wind will generally blow moderately from the south.

Due to the passage of the Kirk depression, cumulative precipitation could reach 100 l/m2 in places in 24 hours in the province of Luxembourg, which will place it on the border between orange and red alert. In the provinces of Namur and Liège, the accumulations will range from 50 to 80 l/m2, justifying an orange code. A yellow code warning is also issued for the provinces of Hainaut and Limburg, as well as Flemish and Walloon Brabant, where cumulative precipitation could reach 25 to 50 l/m2 in 24 hours.

On Wednesday evening and through much of the night, it will continue to rain in many areas. Most of the precipitation will still fall in the southeast of the country. Only at the end of the night will the rain move towards Germany. Minimum temperatures will be around 9 degrees in the Ardennes heights, around 14 degrees near the coast and between 12 and 13 degrees in most other places. The wind will blow moderately from the northern sector, but gusts of 50 to 60 km/h will be possible on the coast and in the Ardennes.

On Thursday the sky will be cloudy with showers coming from the North Sea. These showers could be intense and locally accompanied by a clap of thunder, while maximum temperatures will vary between 10 and 14 degrees.
