WEATHER – Maximum alert level. As Storm Kirk crosses France, Météo France places Seine-et-Marne on red flood alert this Wednesday, October 9, the highest possible alert level. At the same time, around thirty other departments are on orange alert, for floods, violent winds and risk of flooding.

The red vigilance was triggered due to a high risk of flooding of the Grand Morain river, a sub-tributary of the Seine via the Marne. It is recommended not to use your car, to move away from waterways, low points and bridges, and to take shelter on an upper floor if necessary.

“The expected amounts of rain could cause a strong to exceptional flood on (the) Grand Morin river. Rapid rises and localized overflows could be observed as early as Wednesday evening”specifies the specialized government site Vigicrues.

“On the Marne in Île-de-France, notable to significant flood levels could be reached in the coming days. On many tributaries in the Ile de France region or close to the Ile de France, significant or even major floods and a lot of runoff could occur, depending on the precipitation actually observed.continues the same source.

The rains brought by Storm Kirk concern “the entire northern half of the country”, observes Météo France, but they are “most marked are currently between Centre-Val-de- and Île-de-France”. While the precipitation weakens lastingly in Pays-de-Loire at the end of this afternoon, it is now heading towards Champagne-Ardenne and western Lorraine.

Heavy showers are also forecast in the east of the Alpes-Maritimes, and wind gusts of up to 110 km/h are expected in the evening in the west of the Pyrenees, Lyonnais, and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
