Denmark takes measures at its borders

LDenmark has decided to strengthen its border controls with Sweden and Germany to fight crime, after attacks targeting the Israeli embassy in Copenhagen and Stockholm, police announced on Saturday.

“The decision to strengthen police efforts in the fight against crime, visibility and prevention in border areas is based on recent incidents in Copenhagen and Stockholm,” she explains in a press release.

Explosions occurred overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday near the Israeli embassy in Denmark, probably caused by grenade throwing.

Two young Swedes, aged 16 and 19, are suspected of carrying five grenades and throwing two, according to the prosecution, and were placed in detention by a judge on Thursday for 27 days.

Copenhagen police indicated on Saturday on X that the charges against the two young men had been extended to offenses falling under terrorism legislation, without giving further details.

In Sweden, the Israeli embassy in Stockholm was targeted by gunfire, which did not cause any injuries, on Tuesday around 6 p.m.

“Unfortunately, the latest developments confirm that the terrorist threat to Denmark is serious,” said Peter Ekebjærg, chief inspector of the Danish National Police, quoted in the press release.

“We are closely monitoring the current situation, assessing the impact on the overall threat picture and continually implementing the necessary security measures,” he added.

“Random checks of vehicles and travelers at the borders with Sweden and Germany” will be implemented, according to the press release.

The Swedish intelligence service (Säpo) estimated on Thursday that Iran’s involvement in these incidents near Israeli embassies was “a hypothesis”.
