Bolivian justice has opened an investigation against former Bolivian President Evo Morales, whom it accuses of having raped a minor during his mandate eight years ago, the Minister of Justice announced Thursday.

“We have learned, with indignation, of serious offenses which remain unpunished: I am referring in particular to a girl, a girl raped at the age of 15, 16,” declared Justice Minister César Siles.

“A la suite why rape, [la mère] gave birth to a daughter and the father, recognized in the birth certificate, [est] Mr. Evo Morales Ayma,” added the minister.

Mr. Morales, 64, has seen legal proceedings against him multiply recently. Without explicitly mentioning the affair, he reacted on the social network X:

“This does not surprise me or concern me. All neoliberal governments, including the current one, have threatened, persecuted, imprisoned me and tried to kill me.”

Mr. Morales governed the Andean country between 2006 and 2019. He then favored the electoral triumph of Luis Arce, who had been his economy minister. Today in conflict, the two leaders are fighting over the leadership of the left-wing party in power and the candidacy of this formation for the presidential election in August 2025.

Mr. Morales wants to run even though the courts have forbidden him to do so and is trying, with the support of a wing of his party, to get the courts to give in.

His former Interior Minister, Carlos Romero, said this week that the government had launched no fewer than five legal proceedings against Mr. Morales and that he was living under the protection of farmers in his stronghold in Chapare (center). (ats)
