AOnce upon a time, Vouhledar was a very small, narrow town, a high square, a little proletarian Manhattan drawn with a line in the steppe of Donbass, just on the edge of the mine that had given it its name in Russian and Ukrainian: “ gift of coal. For two and a half years, the town of 15,000 inhabitants before the 2022 invasion, located southwest of Donetsk, has regularly suffered furious attacks from Russian armored columns, regularly torn to pieces by Ukrainian artillery, the army of kyiv having transformed Vouhledar into a fortress reputed to be impregnable. Alas, the stronghold fell, officially, this Wednesday, October 2, when the Ukrainian general staff recognized that the Russian army had seized it.
