“There cannot and must not be war in Lebanon,” Emmanuel Macron told the UN

The French president also considered that the war in Gaza “has lasted too long”, and pleaded “for internationally recognised borders to be preserved” throughout the world.

Emmanuel Macron urged Israel to “stop the escalation at Lebanon » before the United Nations Council this Wednesday, September 25. “There cannot and must not be war in Lebanon”he shouted from the podium. “The main risk (in the Middle East) is that of escalation. For too long, Hezbollah has been taking the unsustainable risk of dragging the Lebanese people into war,” he said.

And to continue: “We will act to bring about a diplomatic path to spare civilian lives. There cannot and must not be a war in Lebanon. We call on Israel to cease its strikes in Lebanon and on Hezbollah to cease its firing.”he said.

The war in Gaza “has gone on too long”

He also mentioned Gaza, “where the destiny of the Palestinian people is present and weighs on each of our debates”. “I would like to state ’s position: we condemn the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, and we mourn the victims here, including 48 French citizens. We solemnly request once again that the hostages be released.”he said.

“Israel has the legitimate right to protect its people. However, the war that Israel is waging in Gaza has lasted too long (…) These deaths are a source of hatred, of resentment. The ceasefire must come as soon as possible. It is a question of political will.”he also hammered home.

Limiting the right of veto in cases of “mass crimes”

Emmanuel Macron also called for “restrict” the right of veto in the Security Council in the event of “mass crime”as part of a reform to make the key UN body more effective.

While more and more states are calling for the Council to be enlarged, a reform of its composition alone “would not be enough to restore its effectiveness and I therefore hope that this reform will also allow for a change in working methods, to limit the right of veto in the event of mass crime, and to concentrate on operational decisions required to maintain peace and international security”said the head of state.
