For more than ten years, many people have defended CALEXIT, a movement wanting the country’s most populous state to be independent. In recent days, defenders of the idea have obtained historic progress.

Will this Californian dream come true? In many minds for more than ten years, the project of independence for California has been gaining momentum. If it had been slightly put aside in recent years, it – here it is again -, in force for almost a week and the inauguration of the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump.

The situation has changed: the main instigator and promoter of the measure, Marcus Ruiz Evans, must collect at least 546,651 signatures from registered voters, or 5% of the total votes cast for the post of governor in order for the initiative to be listed on the November 2028 ballot.

The CALEXIT movement is gaining momentum

On his website, the man continues to publish articles and messages in support of this secession. “CALEXIT means that our laws are determined by the people of California and not by bureaucrats in Washington whom we did not elect,” he insists.

He continued: “That means we have a government that begins and ends at the borders of California. This means an end to money siphoned from the pockets of California taxpayers. Most importantly, it means that for the first time in our lives, we control our own destiny. »

Ruiz Evans has been campaigning for this secession since 2012 and has never given up on the idea of ​​this project becoming a reality. One thing really changes today: the former promoter of the movement, who dropped the matter, was less opposed to Donald Trump than the new one. “People think if you’re a secessionist, you’re crazy. I hate Donald Trump, I’m a full-blooded Mexican. The day he went on and said all Mexicans were rapists, I said, ‘He can go fuck himself,’” he said in an interview.

In California, the most populous state in the United States, the initiative is gaining momentum. According to Ruiz Evans, many residents are shocked and outraged by Donald Trump’s victory following the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol. He now believes he can rally support to make his dream a reality. But will they be enough for California to be ‘free’?
