With the arrival of Donald Trump at the White House and his traditional discourse on gender, women are reduced to a “reproductive role” and their rights are threatened, protests Québec solidaire.

The new occupant of the legendary Oval Office wasted no time in carrying out his threats. In particular, he promised on Monday to put an end to policies supporting transgender people in the United States, which will now only recognize two sexes: male and female.
“It’s a return to the traditional roles of men and women. We see this with this traditional discourse which brings women back to their reproductive role. And there are threats to women’s rights, but also threats to minorities!” denounces solidarity co-spokesperson Ruba Ghazal in an interview.
She hopes to quickly see a “surge” in American society to respond.
Watch out for Poilievre
On our side of the border, the prospect of seeing Conservative Pierre Poilievre take the reins of Canada also worries the one who occupies the seat of parliamentary leader of QS during Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois’ paternity leave.
If he is more “timid” than Donald Trump in these matters, the federal leader of the Blues certainly shares certain values with the new American administration.
The threat is therefore very real here too. Quebecers and elected officials must ensure that they defend “even stronger” equality between men and women, the rights of minorities and the right to abortion, insists the member for Mercier.
-Biron “gave up” to Trump
Unfortunately, the first gestures of the Legault government towards the Trump administration were disappointing, in the eyes of Ruba Ghazal.
The Minister of the Status of Women, Martine Biron, who is also responsible for International Relations, went to Washington on the occasion of the swearing-in of the new president. She should have boycotted the event on behalf of women and victims of sexual assault, according to the solidarity. Donald Trump is “a recognized sexual assaulter,” she adds.
“It sends a message that we are giving up, he has impunity (since) he is the president,” she jokes. There are plenty of other people in the Legault government who could have gone there. She should have stayed here and sent a clear message to the women of Quebec that in the face of Donald Trump’s threats to women’s rights, which could have an impact here too, (…) that she was going to do everything to defend the rights of women. Unfortunately, she missed a great opportunity to demonstrate it.
We have to cut off their electricity!
The Prime Minister should also be firmer on the retaliation that Quebec intends to use in the face of tariff threats.
The parliamentary leader of solidarity asks François Legault to put “the embarrassment” aside and to brandish loud and clear that Quebec will cut off hydroelectricity from the Americans if they impose customs duties of 25% on us.
