Mexican authorities have recovered 24 bodies from a clandestine mass grave discovered in December in the suburbs of Guadalajara, the country’s second city, the prosecutor’s office announced on Sunday.

The search in this region of western Mexico began on December 13, 2024 in a municipal plot of land in Zapopan and lasted a month, as the human remains were dismembered and packaged in 72 bags, the state prosecutor’s office said. of Jalisco in a press release.

Investigators and forensic experts used “drones with thermal cameras and georadar”, as well as dogs in their searches, the same source said.

Six people identified at this stage

“The pre-identification of six people – one woman and five men – missing between 2021 and 2023 has been obtained,” the prosecutor’s office said. Sources told AFP that forensic experts were continuing to identify the other 18 people.

Jalisco is the Mexican state with the highest number of missing persons, with 15,382 cases as of December 31, according to information from the Office of the Assistant State Attorney for Missing Persons.

This phenomenon is mainly attributed to the actions of organized crime in this region, dominated by the dreaded Jalisco Cartel – New Generation (CJNG).

Since December 2006, the date of the launch of a controversial military operation to combat drugs, Mexico has experienced more than 450,000 murders and tens of thousands of disappearances, according to official figures.
