20 years after the release of Son of the Maskthe saga The Mask could well make a comeback. At the age of 62 ans, Jim Carrey recently spoke about the possibility of returning in a sequel to The Mask. In an interview when promoting Sonic 3 in 2024he said he was willing to reprise his role if the project idea was interesting enough. But he is not the only one. Cameron Diaz, who played Tina Carlyle in the original film, has also just spoken out on the subject.
A question of professionalism for Jim Carrey
Released in 1994, The Mask is undoubtedly one of Jim Carrey’s most notable films. The actor plays Stanley Ipkiss very well. Everyone knows this man who transforms into a exaggerated and hilarious green version of himself after putting on the mask. The latter also gives him supernatural powers. This film even became a classic 90s comedy.
In 2005, a sequel, Son of the Maskarrives on the screens. But this one does not reach not the same success than the first film. Alan Cumming and Jamie Kennedy took over. But Carrey’s absence and the new direction of the film seem to explain its commercial failure.
