(Keystone-ATS) This agreement should allow the release of 33 hostages kidnapped during the unprecedented Hamas attack which sparked hostilities on October 7, 2023, in exchange for several hundred Palestinians detained by Israel. It is initially expected to take effect at noon on Sunday.

“Having examined all political, security and humanitarian aspects of the proposed agreement and considering that it supports the achievement of war objectives”, the security cabinet “recommended to the government to approve this project”, indicates a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office, specifying that the council of ministers must meet “later today”.

The agreement must in fact still be validated by a vote in the Council of Ministers. Mr. Netanyahu appears assured of winning this vote despite opposition to the deal from his far-right partners.
