“Vance 2028” t-shirts are already popping up online, as the vice-president-elect’s trajectory is dazzling. He made a name for himself in 2016 by chronicling the woes of residents of deindustrialized Ohio, where he was born, in “Hillbilly Elegy.” A bestseller sold more than three million copies and adapted for cinema. He then calls himself an anti-Trumpist. But James David Vance changes his mind as well as his religion. He converted to Catholicism in 2019 and, in 2022, was elected senator of his state with the support of Donald Trump, with whom he made amends. He became his running mate two years later and made himself indispensable.

During the campaign, he multiplied interviews to defend his boss, appeared with his mother, who managed to overcome her addiction to opioids, crushed his Democratic rival Tim Walz during the vice-presidential debate, launched questionable but effective themes, like the false rumor that Haitian refugees were eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. Married to an American born to Indian parents, this fervent supporter of mass expulsions is the natural successor to Trump, who will not be able to run again in 2028.
