Collision between two trams in Strasbourg, at least 20 injured

Two trams collided in the tunnel leading to the stop serving station on Saturday afternoon, an accident which left at least 20 injured, we learned from the prefecture.

“The first report shows 20 people in relative emergency,” said a spokesperson for the prefecture, specifying that the circumstances of the accident have not yet been established.

According to the news site Actu17, a routing error could be to blame. Indeed, one of the trams would have accidentally changed tracks and hit the other tram which was stopped. A large security perimeter was established in front of the station, where numerous ambulances took up position, according to an AFP journalist on site.

A video from a witness on social networks shows a chaotic scene with two trams seriously damaged in the tunnel, at the station. One of the trams appears to have derailed due to the impact.

Strasbourg was the first major French city to put a tram network back into service, starting in 1994. There had not been a major accident since.
