Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Thursday called on China to increase the amount of the currency swap agreement between the two countries, currently set at $2 billion.
During a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Abuja, apart from his call to increase the amount of their currency swap agreement, The Nigerian head of state also requested an upward revision of the $50 billion aid package promised by Beijing to Africa last year, deeming it insufficient to meet the continent’s infrastructure needs.
« The level you approved for Nigeria is inadequate given our program said Mr Tinubu regarding the recently renewed currency swap agreement, worth 15 billion yuan ($2 billion).
During the meeting, the Nigerian president also sought China’s support in obtaining a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
China, for its part, supports Nigerian ambitions on the international scene.

China has also expressed its support for the candidacy of Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for a second term at the head of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
