A young hiker lost in the Australian Alps managed to survive for nearly two weeks on wild berries and two cereal bars, police said Thursday.

Hadi Nazari, a 23-year-old student, missed a meeting with friends on December 26 on a demanding trail in the region of Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest point (2228 m) in the southeast of the country, because he had stopped to take photos.

He was not picked up by a police helicopter until Wednesday evening, almost two weeks later, after hikers heard him calling for help.

Water from streams and bays

“He was able to hydrate thanks to the rivers and streams up in the highlands, and also looked for berries,” Police Superintendent Andrew Spliet said Thursday.

“He saw a shelter up there, where there were two muesli bars. And that’s pretty much all he’s eaten in the last two weeks,” the police officer added to the national television channel. ABC.

The trail taken, through the Snowy Mountains, is one of the most difficult in the country, with thick vegetation, strong winds and low temperatures at night, including summer.
