One person died and five others were injured Monday evening after a small boat exploded at a South Florida marina.
The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. when the boat caught fire, while a boater was refueling, before the flames spread to another boat docked at the historic Lauderdale Marina.
One person was found dead in the waters of the marina, while the five injured were transported to a hospital, said Frank Guzman, spokesperson for the Fort Lauderdale Fire Department, quoted by “Miami Herald”.
Witnesses present in a restaurant told local media that several people were on board at the time of the explosion which shattered the upper half of the boat, in front of shocked witnesses.
“I heard a huge explosion, I looked and saw [une femme] on the second floor of the boat,” a witness told the “Miami Herald” who specified that it took firefighters more than 2 hours to bring the violent fire under control.
Deputy Fire Chief Garrett Pingol told reporters at the scene that the cause of the accident was still under investigation in conjunction with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
