(Agence Ecofin) – In Algeria, the contribution of aquaculture to fish production is still very low. The country, which aims to increase the local supply of fish through farming, wishes to strengthen the food production industry for aquaculture.

Algeria wants to restart its fish feed production from 2025. The decision, reported by the agency Algeria press service (APS) on Monday, December 16, was announced by the Ministry of Agriculture during a meeting bringing together local operators as well as the National Livestock Feed Office (ONAB).

Although no strategy has yet been revealed, the authorities specify that this initiative is part of a new roadmap currently being developed to develop the fishing and aquaculture sector. The revival of fish feed production aims in particular to support growth ambitions in aquaculture.

Indeed, the Algerian government wants to increase its fishery production by nearly 60% to reach 200,000 tonnes by 2030, with aquaculture production contributing 50%. Currently, aquaculture accounts for less than 5% of national fish production, estimated at nearly 125,500 tonnes in 2023.

Regarding the latest investments in the fish feed industry, it should be noted that in last Maythe aquaculture company Aqua Continentale announced the completion of an $8 million aquaculture feed production project with the support of the American firm ESE Intec.

More recently, the Ministry of Fisheries and Fisheries Production announced in last October cooperation with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to set up a feed factory with a capacity of 10 tonnes per day in Ouargla for aquaculture.
