heritage destroyed by armed gangs in Port-au-Prince

The Haitian capital is plunged into an unprecedented spiral of violence. This Sunday, the armed gangs of the Viv Ansanm criminal coalition carried out new deadly attacks in several neighborhoods of the metropolitan area, notably in Poste Marchand. This escalation of violence left behind a heavy toll: men seriously injured, houses burned, and a church completely destroyed.

Port-au-Prince, Sunday December 15, 2024.

The Poste Marchand district was the scene of a brutal attack where the attackers sowed terror. The Church of God, an emblematic place of faith and gathering, was reduced to ashes, ravaged by flames lit by criminals. Despite the rapid intervention of the police, who managed to neutralize several armed individuals, the situation remains out of control.

This series of attacks plunges the inhabitants of the capital into a deep state of shock. We live in constant fear. These gangs want to take over our neighborhoods and impose their law, confides a resident on condition of anonymity.

Faced with this climate of terror, residents are desperately calling on the authorities to act. They demand an urgent and effective response to put an end to the reign of these gangs, whose actions endanger not only human lives, but also the material and spiritual heritage of the nation.

The threat from armed gangs is intensifying, leaving the country’s largest city in a permanent state of alert. Port-au-Prince, cradle of Haitian history and culture, today seems torn apart by violence.
