A man sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a girl in 2007 was executed Tuesday in Missouri, the prison administration of this state in the central United States announced in the evening.
This is the 23rd execution in the country since the start of the year, all by lethal injection, except three by nitrogen inhalation in Alabama (southeast), a controversial method, and the fourth in Missouri.
Christopher Collings, 49, was sentenced to death in 2012 for the rape and murder of Rowan Ford, 9, the stepdaughter of a friend, whom he kidnapped, raped and then strangled when he It was discovered that she had recognized him, according to court documents. He threw her body in a hole, where she was found a few days later.
Exhausted appeals
Christopher Collings’ lawyers have exhausted all legal remedies, with the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejecting his request for a stay of execution. And the Republican governor of Missouri, Mike Parson, rejected the final calls for clemency on Monday.
The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 American states. Six others (Arizona, California, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee) observe a moratorium on executions by decision of the governor.
