Former Florida Attorney General, Donald Trump's lawyer during his impeachment trial in 2020, Pam Bondi was chosen by the 47th US President to be the country's next Minister of Justice, and take the place of the controversial Matt Gaetz, having decided to withdraw.
It was with a publication on his Truth Social network that Donald Trump announced the news. “I have the honor to announce that the former Attorney General of Florida, Pam Bondi, will be our next Minister of Justice,” he wrote this Thursday in a long message extolling the merits of the lawyer.
This appointment comes a few hours after the withdrawal of the controversial Matt Gaetz, initially chosen by the future president of the United States, elected on November 5, 2024. If the latter had attracted the wrath of observers for his lack of experience in the field and her setbacks with the law, Pam Bondi is his opposite.
The first woman to become Attorney General of Florida (between 2011-2019), her CV includes 20 years of experience in the service of the law. During her mandate, Pam Bondi was, for example, behind the launch of around ten lawsuits, including that brought by the State against opioid manufacturers. “She worked to put an end to drug trafficking to reduce the number of deaths linked to Fentanyl overdoses, which have destroyed many families across the country,” insisted Donald Trump on Truth Social.
Prior to that, Pam Bondi had a career as a prosecutor in the Hillsborough County Office. When she was elected attorney general of Florida in 2010, she received the support of former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
2016, fervent militant
At the end of her mandate, Pam Bondi decided to work for Donald Trump after his first victory in 2016. That year, the American agency Associated Press revealed that the lawyer would have received a payment of $25,000 from the foundation. by Donald Trump three years earlier, which would be a violation of policies regarding charitable organizations' engagement in politics.
This donation also came at a time when his office was handling a case concerning fraud accusations against Trump University. According to the Florida Times-Union, the lawyer then tried to return the check, but it was rejected by Donald Trump.
For her part, CNN reported that Pam Bondi worked at Ballard Partners (2019-2020), a lobbying firm where Susie Wiles, future White House chief of staff – and campaign director – of Donald Trump also worked.
Regularly present on Fox News, Pam Bondi is one of the lawyers hired to defend the new American president during his impeachment trial in the Senate in 2020. At the time, she was very critical of by Jack Smith, the special prosecutor who indicted Donald Trump in two federal cases calling him – and other prosecutors – “horrible” people who “advocate for our legal system.”
Very close to Lara Trump, Donald Trump's daughter-in-law, Pam Bondi recently pleaded for her to replace Senator Marco Rubio, chosen by the 47th head of state, as secretary of state.
