Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election by recruiting 2.5 million more voters than in 2020. But he owes his return to the White House above all to the spectacular collapse of the Democratic vote. After the almost complete counting of the votes, the New York Times confirms this Wednesday that Kamala Harris received 7.1 million fewer votes than Joe Biden received in 2020. A number of these votes benefited Trump, who notably made gains among black and Hispanic voters . But the collapse of the Democratic vote can be explained in large part by the decision of many Democratic voters to shun the vote.

“They just weren’t enthusiastic,” he told the Times University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato on Democratic voters. “They were probably disillusioned with inflation, maybe with the border. And they didn’t have the motivation to get up and vote. »

In major U.S. cities, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, Harris lost hundreds of thousands of votes compared to 2020. And in places where the vice president received more votes than Biden, whose Fulton County, Georgia, his gains were eclipsed by those of Trump.

Joel Berenson, Barack Obama’s former pollster, attributes the apathy of part of the Democratic Party’s traditional electorate to the absence of primaries. According to him, the process which leads to the nomination of a presidential candidate would have contributed to the mobilization of voters. The Democrats had to do without it after Biden’s decision to seek a second term, followed by that of leaving the race for the White House 107 days before the election.

“It was a real challenge for Vice President Harris, who had a short lead and would have benefited from a real primary season,” Berenson told the Times. “The Republicans ran a contested primary – even with a former president, they didn’t just give him victory. »

This is probably not the only explanation.

After the vote is almost completely counted, 2,552,517 votes, or 1.7%, separate the winner from the loser in the 2024 presidential election.
