Promote the atypical appearance of pets. This is the aim of the “world’s ugliest dog competition”, organized like every year in Petaluma, California (United States).
Friday June 21, it was Wild Thang, a Pekingese dog, who won the 34th edition of the competition thanks to his atypical physical characteristics such as his small size, his messy hair and his hanging tongue. After several years of failure to finish in second place in the rankings, Wild Thang won the holy grail and allowed its owner to pocket the handsome sum of $5,000. The owners of the dogs that finished in second and third place pocketed $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.
“Wild Thang was a fan favorite and the fact that he competed five times and only came second, it’s like being the bridesmaid and never the bride! I think we were touched by the fact that he deserved to win,” Fiona Ma, one of the competition judges, told Reuters. To win, he had to face seven other competitors who also had serious advantages.
1- Wild Thang, the 8-year-old Pekingese winner of this 34th edition of the “world’s ugliest dog competition”.
2- Rome, a 14-year-old pug who has to move around using a rolling cart, finished in second place.
3- Daisy Mae, a 14-year-old dog abandoned on the street at two years old, finished in third place.
4- Like Ozzie, many dogs participating in this competition come from shelters.
5- Freddie Mercury, described as having “the face of a forklift” is a mainstay at children’s birthday parties in his town.
6- This Chinese crested dog named Poppy was featured in this competition.

8- The goal is to highlight these “wonderful characters and to show the world that these dogs are truly beautiful”… and to graciously reward the winner.
The owner of the winning dog still wins 5,000 dollars, or 4,655 euros.
