The bodies of two brothers, aged 3 and 5, were found in the Valencia region, in two different locations almost 10 kilometers downstream from their home in the suburbs of Valencia.

Spain has been hit by terrible floods for more than two weeks, a disaster which has caused the death of at least 223 people, the majority in the Valencia region. In this territory, the bodies of two brothers, aged 3 and 5, were found, the Guardia Civil, the equivalent of the national gendarmerie, confirmed this Wednesday, November 13.

Ruben and Izan Matias Calatayud were found in different locations near Catarroja, in the Valencia region. Their bodies were found nearly 10 kilometers from their home, located in Torrent, a suburb of Valencia, where they disappeared.

“Dragged out” by water

On the Spanish public channel TVE, their aunt Barbara Sastre explained last week that the sound of the water had frightened the children. Their father tried to reassure them but “all three of them were dragged out” by the water, she explained to TVE. The children's father survived by clinging to a tree for several hours.

“It's been several days and they are very small. We know that they are looking for them and search teams are launched every day,” said the children's aunt on November 6.

Search teams focused their efforts on ravines and isolated areas in the region. Boats were also deployed at sea on the coast of Valencia, placed this Wednesday on red alert for the day of Thursday, November 14 due to “heavy rain”. “The danger is extreme,” said the Spanish meteorological service.
